          About Public Holidays in Brunei

Brunei's calendar is built almost entirely around the Islamic lunar calendar as a Malay Islamic Monarchy: Eid al-Fitr is typically the longest closure of the year (several days), and the Sultan's Birthday (July 15) is marked with a public holiday and elaborate ceremony. National Day (February 23) marks full independence from Britain in 1984, one of the more recent independence dates in Southeast Asia.
