                          About Public Holidays in Bahamas

The Bahamas mark Junkanoo, the country's signature costumed street festival with drumming and dance, informally around Boxing Day and New Year's Day rather than as its own separate named holiday. Independence Day (July 10) marks 1973 independence from Britain, and Emancipation Day (first Monday in August) commemorates the 1834 abolition of slavery, shared in date and meaning with several other former British Caribbean colonies.
