                          About Public Holidays in Ghana

                          Ghana's Founders' Day (August 4) and Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day (September 21) both relate to the country's independence movement but were split into two separate holidays in 2019 specifically to separate the broader independence movement from Nkrumah's individual leadership, following political debate over how each contribution should be recognized. Independence Day itself (March 6) marks 1957 - the first sub-Saharan African colony to gain independence.
